Contacting the IRS by Phone
The main IRS phone number is 1-800-829-1040 for individuals. Hours are typically Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Wait times can be long, especially during tax season. Have your Social Security number, tax returns, and any notices ready. For business taxes, call 1-800-829-4933. For collections, call 1-800-829-7650. The IRS also offers callback options in some cases. Consider calling early in the morning or later in the afternoon for shorter wait times.
IRS Local Offices (Taxpayer Assistance Centers)
Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) offer in-person help by appointment. Use the IRS office locator at IRS.gov to find the nearest location. You must make an appointment—walk-ins may not be accepted. Bring a valid photo ID, Social Security card, and any relevant documents. TAC staff can help with account questions, payment arrangements, and identity verification. They generally cannot prepare tax returns. Appointments fill quickly during peak season, so schedule as early as possible.
Mailing the IRS
The IRS receives millions of pieces of mail. Use the address on your notice or the specific address for your form (found in form instructions). Send mail by certified mail with return receipt to have proof of delivery. Keep copies of everything you send. Response times vary; allow several weeks for the IRS to process correspondence. If you have a deadline, mail early. Include your Social Security number or EIN and a daytime phone number on all correspondence.
Taxpayer Advocate Service
The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers with unresolved problems. You may qualify if you have tried to resolve your issue through normal channels without success, face significant hardship, or need help with a system or process failure. Contact TAS at 1-877-777-4778 or find your local advocate at taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov. TAS can help with delayed refunds, ongoing audits, collection issues, and other problems. There is no fee for TAS assistance.
