Popular Questions
What if I don’t know how much I owe?
We can conduct our initial phone consultation as long as you have a rough estimate of how much you owe. If you decide to move forward, we will request your IRS records to find out exactly how much you owe. And, if you have unfiled tax years, we will estimate the projected amount that you'll owe or get refunded to you.
What if I haven’t filed income taxes in several years?
If you haven’t filed income tax returns in several years, it’s crucial to file all missing returns as soon as possible. Not filing on time will cause late filing and late payment penalties to be added to your balance along with interest. And if you are owed a refund, you may lose it if you don't claim it by filing within three years.
If you ignore your tax balances, the IRS will begin escalating your case through the collections process and may eventually file a lien against your property, garnish your wages, or potentially seize your assets. The IRS generally requires you to file the last six years of tax returns and pay any tax liability you may owe.
A trusted tax relief company like TaxRise can help solve these problems, mitigate any consequences, and negotiate the best resolution for your situation. If you’re ready resolve your tax problems, schedule a free tax consultation today.
Can’t I just call the IRS?
Yes, you can call the IRS yourself. But the downside is you may wait for hours until you're connected with an IRS representative. You will also need to make sure that you are prepared to answer detailed questions about your assets, income, and expenses.
General & Billing Questions
Does the money I give you go to the IRS?
No, the IRS requires all repayment funds to come directly from the taxpayers. The money you give us will go toward our service fees.
What documents do you need to move the process along?
The burden to prove your financial hardship to the IRS falls on us, but we need to provide tax authorities with updated financial documents including but limited to:
- Copy of the three (3) most recent pay stubs
- Proof of any additional income you received on a monthly basis
- Copy of the three (3) most recent bank statements
- Copy of your last tax return
- Proof of all household expenses over the past three (3) months
- Proof of current state or federal tax liability and payment plan (if applicable)
- Most recent mortgage statements (if applicable)
- Proof of payment for health insurance and out-of-pocket medical expenses
Can the state intercept my federal refund and vice versa?
Yes. State and federal tax authorities participate in offset programs. If a debt is owed to one or the other they can claim certain refunds.
Client Support
What if I was married when I owed and now I’m not?
Even if your former spouse has back taxes, you are still just as responsible for them as they are if you filed jointly.
But, if the reason you owed was because of your former spouse’s incorrect tax reporting, you may qualify for IRS Innocent Spouse Relief. It protects people burdened with tax liability due to their spouse’s fraudulent or negligent tax mistakes. Learn more about how you can apply here.
Does the IRS call me?
No. Collection agents do not make phone calls. Correspondence is sent via US mail or made in person. If you receive a call or SMS text message from someone claiming to be the IRS, it may be a scam message.
If you suspect that you have received a fraudulent call or letter, you can find more information on the IRS website.
How do I submit my documents to TaxRise?
The best way to submit your documents is through your client portal. Click the "Clients" menu option on our website and select "Client Portal" to be directed to the login page.
Can I do this myself?
The IRS does not require that you hire professional representation to achieve a tax resolution. However, if you owe more than $5,000 or are facing aggressive collection activities such as a wage garnishment, tax lien, or bank levy, seeking professional help can be very beneficial.
